Blurb:

The sounds of laughter and silverware clinking against china filled the room. The scene before Lida Sandros blurred together like a Monet painting viewed up close, and the noise seemed far off rather than all around her. She barely tasted her chocolate raspberry martini. Her shoulders felt heavy with fatigue. A spot over her right eye was throbbing lightly, signaling the beginning of a migraine.
She took a sip of her drink, then placed the glass back on the bar. Normally, she loved to watch the customers in Premiera’s dining room and guess their stories, but not tonight. She glanced down at her peep-toe shoes. “Hmmmm… I need a pedicure.”
“Your toes look fine.” A deep rumble next to her announced her brother’s arrival. Renato leaned down and embraced her in a warm hug, amusement sparkling in his piercing gray eyes. She sighed and relaxed in her older brother’s arms. His spicy aftershave soothed her nerves a bit. But only a bit.
“What’s wrong, Li?” he asked, pulling back and sitting down on the stool next to her. The bartender automatically placed Renato’s usual scotch on the rocks next to his elbow.
“I’m going to break up with Carlo. It’s not working out.”
“Has he done something wrong? Cheated on you? Said something inappropriate? I can fire him if you want.”
She shook her head.
“Lida, talk to me.”
She’d tried to talk to Lucian, but he was so besotted with Nevada, his new girlfriend, that she wasn’t getting through. Nevada had been more understanding.
“We’re both so busy. We barely see each other nowadays. Don’t get me wrong, he’s wonderful, but I just can’t… I feel like I’m being left behind. I’m too old to go traipsing around the world after a man who may one day turn around and tell me I’m not enough for him,” Lida said bitterly. Memories of past lovers surfaced in her mind. She shoved those away as the alcohol began to relax her.
She waited for Renato to argue with her. The sounds of laughing couples filled the silence that fell between them.
The hard planes of her brother’s visage softened as he took a sip of his Scotch. “I understand.”
