Q&A:
1) When did you know you wanted to be a Graphic Artist? I've always been attracted to the process of creating a visual product (particularly that done by hand) but for the longest time did not think I had sufficient talent. Photography was too expensive, and so my creative streak was pushed into writing. In 2003/04, I was forced to come up with some fixes for a marketing product for my employer and got my first copy of photoshop. From there, it escalated to 3D computer graphics and now that I have finally learned enough patience and self-forgiveness, into sketching.

2) How long does it take you to do a (design, book cover, website)? Anywhere from 30 minutes to a month. It depends on how difficult the subject matter/concept/characters are to represent visually.

3) Where do you get your inspiration from? Everywhere and I would think this is true of all artists, visual or otherwise. Everything is fodder for a creative personality.

4) Any tips for aspiring Graphic Artists? Stop thinking you "can't," learn patience and dedicate yourself to objective quality for your field.

5) How do you calculate your price for one of your (figures, book covers, websites)? I rarely do work for someone else and so far I charge under market because taking creative direction from someone else is still a learning experience for me. There have been times that I sold a piece for $40 and it took 20+ hours to do. There are other times I sold something for $50 and it took 30 minutes to do. Now I try to figure on a range that, after costs, will earn about $20 an hour. So being able to figure out how long an image will take you to do based on the specs you're given becomes absolutely crucial.

6) What is your favorite (book cover, figure, website) that you've created? It really depends on the day, but I'll answer with one that is relatively safe and accessible from an interpretive POV – it is titled "No Mouth" and is a play on the Harlan Ellison short story of "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream." Readers can see the image here (http://www.visualsnark.com/images/nomouth_museum.jpg) and learn more about the story, if they haven't already read it, here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Have_No_Mouth,_and_I_Must_Scream)

7) Is there a place other than your website, where we can view your work? Most of the work I post on my website is double posted someplace else, but my Renderosity gallery is at http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/browse.php?user_id=156927 (people have to have a free membership to Renderosity to view gallery images, however).

8) I know there a few programs that an Artist uses to create their work, such as Daz or Photoshop, what do you use? I primarily use Poser 7 (started in P5), photoshop 7 or elements (depending on the machine I'm working on) and Vue 6 Pro. I'm hopeful I'll be able to add a few higher end programs like Cinema 4D at the beginning of 09.

9) Silly Time, what would a lion, elephant, zebra, penguin and snake look like smooshed together to create one animal and what would you call this new creature? I would call it "Mommy!" and it would look like this: [PICTURE ATTACHED ALSO AVAILABLE ON ANNVREMONT.COM/IMAGES/ANNVREMONTSMOMMY.JPG]

10) Anything you want to say or add? Anything you want to ask me? And for the record, yes I am crazy so you can't ask that. LOL – Just thanks (!) for providing a spotlight for artists :-)

Coyote's Woman (http://www.changelingpress.com/product.php?&upt=book&ubid=979) is a contemporary shifter erotic romance set along the U.S./Mexico border. It releases from Changeling Press September 5!

About the story -

Lucy Suther is a bartered woman who hates the sight of dust rising up on the road into the Double Nought Ranch. It accompanied her on her bound arrival and bore silent witness to her marriage to a smuggler of flesh and drugs. Now her husband is two months missing and hoped dead, she's trapped on the remote ranch, and the coyote that killed off her chickens is growing bolder. So, when a sexy stranger claiming to be her brother-in-law drives in on a cloud of dust, she has to wonder — will trusting him earn her a way off the Double Nought or an express ride to a moonlit grave?

About the excerpt -

The story features 2 POVs — Lucy in First Person and Shane in Third Person (and usually when he is in or near his shifter form). I'm not sure how people will take to reading those two disparate POVs (they are seldom mixed) but I thought it worked best for the story. The excerpt is in Shane's POV. Hope you enjoy and that you find, like I did, that Shane is one of those men that can make a girl go "Woof!"

Now, without further delay — the excerpt

The first night home was hell. Shane felt himself being pulled in two directions. In the next room was the woman, Lucy. The desert sun had lightened her dark hair with coppery highlights while it had baked her skin brown. He could smell the warm spice of her skin, the moist earth of her brown-black hair, the aroma deepening as his thoughts traveled down to the V of her thighs. His tongue thickened, yearning for a taste of her skin, the sweat along her stomach and thighs, the cream buried between them. The heat of her body and the sound of restless shifting within her bed drew him naked to lean against the wall, to imagine entering her room and playing out every fantasy he'd had in the last six months of watching her from afar.

But at the back of his neck, he could feel the pull of the moon. Selene, Diana, Luna — his many-named goddess was outside, naked, pale-skinned and spilling her light across the desert floor. She called, stroked her cold white fingers down his spine while she whispered promises of fresh blood in his ear. She was at her fullest tonight, tugging at him to come out and play..

One call or the other — Lucy or the moon — his body demanded he answer. Shane felt the prickle of coarsening hair along his back and stomach. He ran his hand along the wall that divided him from the woman, his nails lengthening to mar the plaster. He wanted her. A lick, a taste. A moan, a scream. He called her name, low in his throat so she wouldn't waken.

Lucy.

The change in him was coming hard and fast. The need to possess the woman warred with the need to run wild and overwhelmed his control. Leaping onto the bed, he threw the window open and jumped. Four legs hit the ground in quick succession. Turning back to the house, he nosed beneath Lucy's window, listening again to the sounds of her sleeping.

Shane paced along the wall; energy bristled through his coat. She was Theo's woman, but Theo was dead. He'd killed him two months back. Pack law gave him the right to keep the fruits of that kill.. The ranch and house that had been half his by birth were now his by blood..

And the woman — above all else, the woman was his.

Q&A:

1) When did you know you wanted to be a Graphic Artist? - I actually started in graphics to help my web design business. After getting tired paying other people to make my graphics for me, I picked up a copy of PaintShop Pro. Not long after that I found Poser. Now I am a gonner.

2) How long does it take you to do a (design, book cover, website)? - Depending on what it is, it can take twenty minutes to days. The pose, lighting and camera angle has to be just right. I have been known to render something ten or more times to make sure it comes out just right.

3) Where do you get your inspiration from? - My muse is everywhere, but most of my inspiration comes from music or just how I'm feeling that day. Some days she is more elusive than others. Some days I do four of five pieces in a row.

4) Any tips for aspiring Graphic Artists? - Don't give up and listen to your heart. There are many people who questioned me sitting in front of the computer for hours creating artwork, even myself sometimes. Just keep at it and you will get where you are going.

5) How do you calculate your price for one of your (figures, book covers, websites)? - Before quoting a price I look at the project, what is involved and how long it will take. I tend to go a bit lower than the market price, but my customers are just as happy.

6) What is your favorite (book cover, figure, website) that you've created? - My favorite piece is called “Going Up”. I love angels and think it came out just about perfect.

7) Is there a place other than your website, where we can view your work? - I have 2 galleries on deviantArt. ExploringEve is for more of my provocative and nude works. Evadnee is for the tamer and more spiritual stuff.

8) I know there a few programs that an Artist uses to create their work, such as Daz or Photoshop, what do you use? - I have Poser 5 and 6, but my Vista hates them. Mostly I use DAZStudio and PaintShop Pro.

9) Silly Time, what would a lion, elephant, zebra, penguin and snake look like smooshed together to create one animal and what would you call this new creature? - Hmmm. What an imagination you have there… I guess it would be the elephant's body with a tail like a snake, head like a lion with penguin's beak and striped like a zebra. What would I call it? A bad dream LOL

10) Anything you want to say or add? Anything you want to ask me? And for the record, yes I am crazy so you can't ask that. LOL - When are you going to open an image gallery for pink chairs on the Pink Chair Diaries?

Bio and Links:

My real name is Syneca (yes really). I ams the Graphic Services Manager for Jasmine-Jade Enterprises. An artist, videographer and photographer, my work has appeared in national magazines and online magazines, in ads, film and video and on book covers. To date I've has created more than 2000 book covers. I write under the pen name, Ciana Stone. Married and with children (grown thank goodness), I live with the love of her life in Florida where I enjoy photography, disc golf, swimming, running, weight training, yoga and the rodeo.

Q&A:

1) When did you know you wanted to be a Graphic Artist?

That's a good question and I don't know that I experienced one special moment when I knew I wanted to be in graphic arts. It was more of an evolution. I started as a portrait artist and photographer, moved into fantasy art and graphics as technology provided the tools.

2) How long does it take you to do a (design, book cover, website)?

That depends on a lot of factors. If I have the resources I need (photographs for example) I can create a couple of book covers in a day's time. If I have to take several (or a dozen) photos and cut them up in order to “Frankenstein” a person together it takes about a day. Websites take far longer for me because I'm not really programming oriented. I can reverse engineer a site much better than start from scratch. Some sites take a couple of days and there've been others that took a few months. Like I said, a lot of factors come into play so there's no set rule on these things.

3) Where do you get your inspiration from?

When it comes to book covers, from the blurb or synopsis of the book. If I know the general description of the main characters then reading the blurb usually inspires an idea. Authors often suggest ideas and if what they suggest sparks something inside my mind's eye I develop it. For my own person artwork inspiration comes from … the cosmos? I never have figured that one out. I just feel grateful when inspiration hits. :-)

4) Any tips for aspiring Graphic Artists?

Regardless of what branch of the arts you're in, you have to be in it because you're passionate about it. Not for how much you can make or whether you can become famous. There are so many talented artists in the world. Far more than there are jobs. And not all jobs in the field are as creative and exciting as taking photos for covers and ads or creating covers and advertisements. I'd suggest that you think long and hard and make sure you have a true passion for it. If you do, then go for it and when life trips you up or knocks you down, just get up and try again.

5) How do you calculate your price for one of your (figures, book covers, websites)?

I don't do freelance book covers. I'm under exclusive contract with Jasmine Jade Enterprises, the parent company of Ellora's Cave, Cerridwen Press and The Lotus Circle. If I do a portrait (photography) for someone I charge around 200.00. If it's a hand-painted portrait the fee is 2500.00. I don't do websites anymore except for myself because the coding gives me the creeping willies and is way too frustrating. For other graphic and design work I charge 100.00 an hour.

6) What is your favorite (book cover, figure, website) that you've created?

I guess my favorite sites are my little art site (www.originalsyn.us) and the one I created for my pen name (www.cianastone.com) . Right now my favorite piece of art is Stairway to Heaven (http://www.originalsyn.us/gallery9.htm). I created this last May when my niece was in hospice on her death bed. It was part of the grieving process, I suppose. I wanted to honor her memory and what she meant to me so I gave her wings and sent her on her way. My favorite book cover? I don't know that I have a favorite. Each time I create one it's my favorite - until I do another one.

7) Is there a place other than your website, where we can view your work?

Hmmm, well on the Ellora's Cave website(www.ellorascave.com) since I have a lot of covers there. And on Cerridwen Press (www.cerridwenpress.com) and The Lotus Circle (www.thelotuscircle.com). I did the site for The Hussies(www.thehussies.us). That's the site for a group of writers I've partnered with to write a series and I created a site and did the art for a really great friend and her new book, Man Overboard by Lara Diamond (www.manoverboard.us). Aside from that, you can see ads I create in Realms of Fantasy magazine.

8) I know there a few programs that an Artist uses to create their work, such as Daz or Photoshop, what do you use?

I use Photoshop almost exclusively unless I need an effect that I can't create on my own or with PS. Then I use After Effects, which is really for film, but has some nice effects that can be exported as images.

9) Silly Time, what would a lion, elephant, zebra, penguin and snake look like smooshed together to create one animal and what would you call this new creature?

A mess? Eeek, I'm not sure I even want to imagine something like that. But if such a poor creature existed I suppose it would have to be called a E-zeuinake? Or a mess J

10) Anything you want to say or add? Anything you want to ask me? And for the record, yes I am crazy so you can't ask that. LOL

Well darn, there went my question. No not really. What I'd like to ask is what you find most attractive on book covers. Do covers with people catch your eye more than those with an abstract scene or a shot of an object or landscape? And also, what's YOUR favorite cover?

And I'd like to thank you for inviting me to participate. This was a lot of fun :-)

My latest release is A Taste for Jazz

Bounty hunter Jazz Boudreaux wouldn't believe it if she hadn't seen it with her own eyes. One minute she's scuffling with a "collar" in California. The next she's in a Scottish castle, being recruited by an ancient order of Hussy Warriors sworn to use their special powers to rescue the world in times of danger.

Her mission: Keep some geek scientist alive long enough to develop a technology that will save the planet.

Jazz soon discovers Dr. Rockwell Burns is anything but geeky. Delicious, maybe. Dangerous, definitely. Hard and a powerful, like his name. Suddenly, it's more personal than saving the world. It's about saving the man she loves.

It's available at Ellora's Cave http://www.ellorascave.com/productpage.asp?ISBN=9781419915925
